Entering Montana

Today's short 55 mile ride from Powell to Missoula was a challenge because of the climb to Lolo pass at 5,235 ft, combined with a surprising headwind on the opposite side of the pass. During the ascent, drivers were incredibly supportive, including one that gave me a round of applause as I neared the summit, which helped sustain me during the taxing climb. On much of the descent, the road was along the Lolo Creek which may have been less spectacular than the Columbia or Clearwater, but it featured great wildlife ranging from a moose, many deer, and one eagle's nest at the peak of a tree along the road (including plaintiff cries from the nest and an adult eagle who watched me carefully and did a few fly-bys until I moved on).

It's a thrill to hit my fifth state and watch the odometer roll over 1,500 miles. Mentally, entering the Mountain time zone makes me feel like I'm an hour closer to home!

Hi Rob,
I'm keeping up with you and your trip, (I'm doing the armchair version...) and am enjoying your descriptions and photos tremendously. Keep up the great commentary as you cover those beautiful miles!

Hi Rob: I am following your exploits and am enjoying the terrific commentary. (Ever thought of being a writer ?:)) Enjoy "big sky" country. I remember the endless blue sky during our drive through Montana many years ago.

Dude, that is some impressive riding. How did you hook it up with google maps?

I'm afraid that the Google maps integration is shockingly primitive. I pull up the map on Google manually, and copy the "Link to this page" hyperlink into my blog.

Still, I like the hybrid map view that Google provides, as it gives everyone a sense of the sort of terrain that I'm cycling through.

Rob.....
Needless to say, we miss you back in Bronxville...but are so IMPRESSED with your "true grit". My legs ache just thinking about it all. If you get too "buff", we shall have to ply you with wine sweets, and a plasma tv on your return.
